Legal problems often arrive during some of the most difficult and consequential moments in a person’s life. We believe effective representation begins with listening.
Our clients should understand what is happening in their case, the options available to them, and the decisions that may lie ahead. We communicate directly, explain the law in plain language, and give our clients the information they need to make informed decisions.
We also believe lawyers have responsibilities beyond the courtroom. Zavala Law Group has longstanding relationships with nonprofit organizations, community institutions, and advocates working on civil rights, human rights, education, immigration, Indigenous rights, and criminal justice reform.
Community involvement is not separate from our legal practice. It has shaped the kind of lawyers we strive to be.

Salomón Zavala
A lawyer shaped by the community that raised him.
Salomón Zavala was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, the son of Mexican immigrants. The communities that shaped him remain central to how he understands the role of a lawyer and the responsibility that comes with practicing law.
For more than 20 years, Zavala has represented individuals, families, and organizations in consequential legal matters involving civil rights, wrongful convictions, serious injury and wrongful death, immigration, and institutional accountability.
His civil rights practice has included representing people harmed by police misconduct, wrongful convictions, and government institutions. His work has resulted in significant recoveries for clients, including seven-figure settlements, while other matters have focused on freedom, constitutional rights, and accountability rather than financial recovery.
Zavala also serves as general counsel to nonprofit organizations, community institutions, and businesses, advising leadership on governance, employment, contracts, litigation, regulatory matters, risk, and other significant legal decisions.
His work extends beyond traditional legal representation. Zavala serves as Executive Director of Ollin Law, a nonprofit organization focused on criminal justice and second chances, and has provided pro bono representation and advocacy involving wrongful convictions, immigration, and Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
Zavala earned his B.A. with honors from Amherst College in 2001 and his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2005. He is fluent in Spanish and has served on the boards of community-based nonprofit organizations.
